Local benefit raises money for Oklahoma tornado relief

FREMONT, Neb. —Organizers held a benefit in Fremont Sunday to send support to victims of the Moore, Okla., tornado.

The rare EF5 tornado touched ground for about a half hour on May 20. Nearly two dozen people were killed and hundreds were injured or had their homes destroyed.

Bobby and Tonnya Figueroa watched reports of the devastation and knew they wanted to help the victims, especially the children who lost their families.

The couple arranged for Tin Lizzy’s, the restaurant where Bobby plays in the house band, to host “M.O.B. fest” or Moore Oklahoma Benefit.

“In our small community whenever something happens, they get together and that was our thought,” Tonnya said. “We wanted to help any way we could.”

About 350 people attended the event. A raffle and silent auction raised about $5,000. All proceeds went to Feed the Children  and the disaster relief fund.

An account at First State Bank will take donations for another five days and are being collected care of M.O.B. Fest.

Patti Vancil has been seeing pink.

Lots of pink.

That may sound odd for a woman whose favorite color is purple, but Vancil’s pink has a purpose.

She, along with family members and a best friend, has formed The Pink Ladies Club. The club provides a unique way for loved ones to support the Fremont woman, diagnosed with cancer last fall.
